Cafe Papeneiland, Amsterdam

Café Papeneiland is a classic Amsterdam brown café, known for its apple pie and for a past that runs deeper than its cozy interior suggests. The building dates back to the early 17th century, and the café itself has been operating here since 1896, inside a national monument completed in 1622. Dark wood, soft chandeliers, and Delft plates set the tone for what the Dutch call gezelligheid-a warm, unpretentious place for coffee, beer, or a generous slice of pie. At first glance, it feels like a timeless neighborhood café. Historically, it was also part of a quiet act of religious defiance.

During the Protestant Reformation of the 16th and 17th centuries, Catholic worship was banned in the Dutch Republic, forcing believers to practice in secrecy. Hidden churches appeared across the city, including the famous Our Lord in the Attic. In the Jordaan, worshippers once reached a clandestine church through an underground passage running beneath the canal. That tunnel opened inside the building now occupied by Café Papeneiland and remains visible today. The café’s name reflects this history: Papeneiland means “Papists’ Island,” a reference to Roman Catholics and their loyalty to the Pope.

Today, the café is best known for its apple pie, and the reputation is earned. The crust is flaky, the filling balances tart apples with cinnamon, and a dollop of lightly whipped cream completes the plate. While most visitors come for dessert and conversation, the café still carries traces of its earlier role-one where everyday hospitality once masked a hidden route to worship.
