Casa de España (The Spain House), San Juan

Casa de España, meaning “The Spain House,” was founded in 1914 as a cultural and social institution for the Spanish community in Puerto Rico. Its present clubhouse was completed in the 1930s and reflects the strong architectural ties between Spain and the island. The building is especially recognisable for its white walls, red-tiled roofs, towers and decorative details inspired by Spanish and Moorish design.

Inside, the complex is arranged around an open courtyard with arcades, tiled surfaces and landscaped areas. Decorative woodwork, arches and ceramic details reinforce its Iberian character. Several rooms were created for meetings, celebrations and cultural gatherings, reflecting the institution’s original role as a centre where Spanish residents could maintain social and cultural connections.

Casa de España has also preserved paintings and other artworks collected over many decades, while continuing to host cultural and social activities. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 for its architectural importance. Although access to some interior areas may depend on events or private functions, visitors can still appreciate the distinctive exterior and the building’s connection with Puerto Rico’s long Spanish cultural heritage.
