Cathedral of the Dormition of the Theotokos, Vladivostok
The Cathedral of the Dormition of the Theotokos was one of old Vladivostok’s main Orthodox churches. Its stone building was begun in the 1870s, redesigned by architect Miller in 1886, and consecrated in December 1889. Built for about 1,000 worshippers, with a main dome rising roughly 35 metres, it reflected the city’s growth from military outpost to Pacific port.
Its domes, scale, and elevated position made it a visible landmark for sailors, officials, merchants, and residents. The cathedral was known for its carefully ordered exterior decoration, while its position above the harbour gave it a clear place in the city’s coastal skyline.
Its history ended in 1938, when Soviet authorities demolished it during the anti-religious campaigns of the period. The site was later reused for secular buildings, leaving the former cathedral visible mainly through photographs, records, and local memory. It should not be confused with Vladivostok’s first wooden church of 1861 or with the later Cathedral of the Intercession, reconstructed in the 2000s.
