Maksim Gorky Academical Regional Drama Theater, Vladivostok
The Maksim Gorky Academical Regional Drama Theater is one of the main cultural institutions of the Russian Far East. Named after Maxim Gorky in October 1932, the theatre gave its first performance a month later, on November 3. In its early years, the troupe worked inside the historic Zolotoy Rog, or Golden Horn, hotel.
The present theatre building was completed in 1975 after a decade of construction. Its concrete-and-glass design reflects the civic modernism of the Soviet period, with a strong public presence rather than decorative excess. Inside, it contains two separate performance spaces: a large semi-ring-shaped auditorium seating more than 900 people and a smaller stage used for chamber productions and experimental drama.
The theatre received the honorary title “Academic” in 1997, recognizing its long artistic contribution. Its repertory combines Russian classics, modern plays, comedies, and adaptations of Western literature, including a noted stage version of Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Because of the region’s position near East Asia, the company has also toured in Japan and South Korea, giving the theatre a wider cultural role beyond its home stage.
