The Church of the Santissima Annunziata (Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata) in Siena is a significant Catholic place of worship with a deep-rooted history tied to the city’s heritage. Located in the Terzo di Città area, this church uniquely sits in the oldest nucleus of the ancient Spedale di Santa Maria della Scala, facing the illustrious Piazza del Duomo, opposite the cathedral. Originally serving as a chapel for the hospital, its existence is recorded as early as 1090 in historical documents.

Constructed in 1257, the Church of the Santissima Annunziata underwent major transformations in the latter half of the 15th century. This renovation was led by Guidoccio of Andrea and prominently assisted by Francesco di Giorgio, a notable artist and architect of the time. Francesco was instrumental in designing the lavish (now lost) decorations of the noble tribune, or the apse area, as well as the intricate coffered ceiling of the church.

Architecturally, the Church of the Santissima Annunziata is distinct in its integration within the larger hospital complex, lacking a traditional independent façade. It instead presents a side elevation to Piazza del Duomo. This elevation is partially clad in marble and features a unique loggia with mullioned windows supported by marble columns. The church is characterized by its singular large nave, a high ceiling adorned with wooden coffers, and large, partially walled-up Renaissance single-lancet windows. Notably, the church lacks a bell tower, adding to its unique architectural features.

The interior of the church is equally remarkable, with the main altar positioned on a raised platform at the end of a broad staircase, elevating it above the nave. The presbytery's side walls are raised to the level of the battlements of the adjacent Rector's Palace, enhancing the grandeur and monumental nature of the church.
