Chiesa di San Giuseppe di Castello (Church of St. Joseph of Castello), Venice

Chiesa di San Giuseppe di Castello (Church of St. Joseph of Castello), Venice

To fully explore the eastern districts of Venice, make sure to include a visit to the Church of San Giuseppe di Castello, also known as San Isepo. Located just north of the Giardini della Biennale public gardens, you can conveniently access the church through a street only a few meters away. Inside, you will encounter a grand monument dedicated to Doge Marino Grimani, crafted in 1595 by Vincenzo Scamozzi and featuring intricately carved reliefs and figures created by Campagna, adorning its left side.

The focal point of the church is the remarkable main altarpiece titled "The Adoration of the Shepherds", a late masterpiece by the renowned painter Paolo Veronese. Commissioned by the very same Marino Grimani, the altarpiece depicts the scene of the shepherds paying homage to the newborn Jesus. Notably, Marino Grimani himself is portrayed as the saintly figure of Saint Jerome on the left side of the artwork, creating a personal connection between the patron and the painting.
