Chirurgische Klinik (Surgical Clinic), Heidelberg

Founded in 1386, the Ruprecht Karls University in Heidelberg is the oldest university in Germany, with the Medical Faculty being a core part of it from the very beginning. The Surgical Clinic, established in 1818, quickly made significant medical advancements, including the first kidney transplant, the first successful removal of the esophagus for malignant diseases, and important research in anesthesia. Important institutions such as the German Cancer Research Center and the Study Center of the German Society for Surgery were also founded in and around the Surgical Clinic.

In less than two centuries, this small hospital grew into a world-renowned institution, treating patients from all over Germany and many other countries. Today, it continues to excel in innovative research, with doctors and researchers committed to developing new treatments for life-threatening diseases like pancreatic cancer and improving surgical methods to enhance recovery and reduce complications. Efforts are also focused on alleviating suffering and ensuring a high quality of life for patients with serious chronic conditions like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

The Heidelberg Surgical Clinic is not only recognized for its outstanding therapy and research but also for its exceptional training program. Medical students from around the world come here to participate in one of Europe's best training programs. Moreover, doctors from both Germany and abroad regularly visit Heidelberg for internships to learn from the clinic's expertise through internships.
