Wilckensschule Elementary School, Heidelberg

Wilckensschule Elementary School occupies a protected early-20th-century building noted for its red sandstone exterior, balanced rows of tall windows and restrained decorative carving. The complex has a central section between two classroom wings, blending neoclassical and Baroque elements. It opened as the Vangerowschule in 1906 on the site of a cement factory destroyed by fire in 1895; the western wing followed in 1908.

The building reflects several stages of educational and wartime history. During both world wars, it served as military accommodation and a hospital. In 1916, it was renamed after Mayor Dr. Wilckens, who had strongly supported local schools. Boys and girls were originally taught separately, while mixed classes became standard toward the end of the 1960s. Since 2007, the institution has operated solely as a primary school.

Visitors can examine the long façade, reddish masonry, repeated window bays and projecting central sections from the surrounding public space. A pupil-designed play sculpture was added to the courtyard in 1998. As this remains an active educational site rather than a public museum, access may be restricted, and visitors should avoid disturbing lessons or photographing children.
