Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary 'Adorers', Cordoba

Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary 'Adorers', Cordoba

The Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, known as “Adoratrices,” is linked to the Argentine Adoratrices, a Catholic congregation founded in 1885 under Father José María Bustamante. Its creation responded to the growth of secular ideas in late 19th-century Argentina, especially in education. The church and its adjoining school were conceived as places for Catholic formation, combining worship, teaching, and community life.

The foundation stone was laid in 1890, and the church was inaugurated in 1913. Its Gothic-inspired design has pointed arches, strong vertical lines, and twin openwork spires about 28 metres high. Restoration work showed that the façade was originally finished in ivory and old rose tones, later darkened by soot from nearby railway activity.

Inside, the church preserves a more intimate atmosphere, with a painted vault that gives the nave a light, open feeling. It also preserves the memory of Father Bustamante, whose remains were placed here in 1931. For decades, its towers greeted train passengers arriving nearby, especially when lit at night. Today, the church links faith, education, restoration, and railway-era memory.
