Como House, Melbourne
Como House is a historical residence located in the City of Stonnington, Victoria, along with its associated gardens. It was originally built in 1847 for Sir Edward Eyre Williams and currently operates as a tourist attraction under the management of the National Trust of Australia. The gardens are accessible to the public from Monday to Saturday, with hours from 9 am to 5 pm, and on Sundays from 10 am to 5 pm. Moreover, guided tours of the historic house are available every Saturday and Sunday.
Constructed in 1847, Como House was initially owned by Sir Edward Eyre Williams, a prominent supreme court justice. However, in 1852, it changed hands and was acquired by investor Frederick Dalgety. Just a year later, John Brown, a skilled builder, took over the property and initiated a series of renovations to enhance its features. These renovations included the addition of a second story, and the gardens were significantly improved under the renowned gardener William Sangster until 1861. Unfortunately, financial difficulties led to a mortgage to the Bank of Australasia.
In 1864, Charles Armytage purchased Como House for £14,000. The Armytage family resided there for nearly a century, eventually selling the estate to the newly established National Trust of Australia in 1959. It's also worth noting that the famous musical group, The Seekers, filmed the video for their rendition of "Morningtown Ride" at Como House.
