Composition Bahram Gur, Baku

The Composition Bahram Gur, prominently located on Neftchilar Avenue in Baku, is a captivating sculptural tribute to the epic narrative of Nizami Ganjavi's poem "Seven Beauties" ("Yeddi Gözəl"). Unveiled in 1959, this artistic representation was crafted as a part of a cultural revival and beautification project in Baku, conceptualized by three student friends-Aslan Rustamov, Albert Mustafayev, and Gorkhmaz Sujaddinov-following a competition aimed at enhancing the city's aesthetic appeal.

Designed by architect Vadim Shulgin and sculpted by the honored Azerbaijani artist Gorkhmaz Sujaddinov, this piece marks a significant departure from the typical Soviet-era statues proliferating across the region during that period. It was one of the first professional works of Sujaddinov and the first Azerbaijani sculptural monument dedicated to a literary hero from Nizami's works. The bronze sculpture is set within a fountain, featuring Bahram Gur, a legendary 14th Shah of the Sassanid dynasty known for his valor and justice, engaging in a fierce battle against a serpent dragon, a symbol of evil in Eastern mythology.

This dynamic scene not only captures the physical confrontation between the hero and the dragon but also symbolizes the broader theme of good triumphing over evil-a resonant motif in both historical and cultural contexts. The setting of the sculpture in a fountain may also symbolize purification and renewal, reinforcing the sculpture's allegorical message. The Composition Bahram Gur stands not only as a piece of public art but also as a historical reflection of Azerbaijani pride and a celebration of its rich literary heritage.
