Crane Bridge, Salisbury

Crane Bridge is one of Salisbury’s oldest surviving bridges, with a crossing at this site recorded by around 1300. The stone bridge visible today mainly dates from the 15th century and was once linked with Fisherton Bridge as one of the “Upper and Lower” bridges of Fisherton. Its name appeared by the 16th century and refers to a medieval lifting crane, not the bird.

Built from local stone, the bridge has four splayed arches with projecting keystones and cutwaters that helped manage the River Avon’s flow. Merchants used this riverside area to move timber, stone, wool, grain, and other goods between boats and land routes. The bridge was widened in 1898, when the south side was dismantled and rebuilt farther out, while the north-facing medieval masonry remained largely undisturbed.

Today, Crane Bridge remains a working route for pedestrians and vehicles while preserving much of its historic character. Nearby Church House, once a 15th-century mansion and later a workhouse, was threatened during the widening works but survived through preservation efforts. Its stone parapets, river views, and trading history make it an interesting stop for visitors.
