Church House, Salisbury

Church House is one of the city’s most important surviving medieval buildings, with its oldest sections dating to around 1455. It was built for William Lightfoot, a wealthy wool merchant whose success reflected the importance of the wool trade to the local economy. The property later became known as Audley House and was associated with the Audley family during the Tudor period.

The building has served many different purposes throughout its long history. Historical records suggest that Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn stayed here during their visit in 1535. From 1634, the property operated as the parish workhouse for more than two centuries, providing accommodation and support for the poor. In the late 19th century, it was acquired by the Church of England and restored by architect George Crickmay for use as diocesan offices.

Visitors can admire its historic stone construction, clay-tiled roof, stone-mullioned windows, and distinctive four-centred archway with oak doors. These architectural features reflect several centuries of development while preserving much of the building’s medieval character. After serving as the headquarters of the Diocese of Salisbury for more than a century, the property was vacated in 2023 and is now being converted into residential housing, ensuring a new chapter in the life of this historic landmark.
