Daiichi Torii, Tokyo

Daiichi Torii stands as the primary entrance gate to Yasukuni Shrine, a Shinto shrine nestled in the Chiyoda district of Tokyo. This shrine was established by Emperor Meiji in June 1869. Originally, the shrine's primary purpose was to venerate the Japanese emperor as a divine figure, but it has evolved over time to encompass those who perished in wars involving Japan throughout the Meiji, Taishō, and early Shōwa periods.

The term "torii," in Japanese characters, literally translates to "bird abode." This name is believed to stem from their resemblance to perches used by birds, which are considered messengers of the deities in Shinto tradition. Daiichi Torii, which happens to be the largest torii gate in Japan, was erected in 1921. It was often described in poetic terms as "the grand gate that appears to pierce the heavens," making it a prominent and easily recognizable landmark for visitors.

Sadly, due to deterioration, the gate was removed in 1943. However, it was reconstructed in 1974, using advanced weather-resistant steel technology, thanks to the efforts of veterans and worshippers. This reconstructed gate boasts impressive dimensions, with towering pillars reaching 25 meters in height and measuring 2.5 meters in diameter, a lintel spanning 34 meters in length and measuring 2.7 meters in diameter, and an overall weight of 100 tons. This remarkable structure now holds the distinction of being the tallest and largest torii gate in all of Japan.

Furthermore, Daiichi Torii has been engineered to withstand formidable challenges, including earthquakes registering 7 on the Japan Meteorological Agency seismic intensity scale and winds reaching speeds of 80 meters per second. These features grant it an expected lifespan of an astonishing 1,200 years.
