Dashchoilin Monastery, Ulaanbaatar

Dashchoilin Monastery, Ulaanbaatar

Dashchoilin Monastery stands as one of only three similar monastic structures left in Mongolia. Erected in 1890 at a different site, it held significant religious prominence in Ulaanbaatar, housing between 100 to 600 lamas or monks. Its operations ceased, and it fell to ruin in 1938 due to governmental intervention.

Once an integral part of Ulaanbaatar, Dashchoilin Monastery welcomed scholars and monks from across Mongolia. In 1990, efforts to revive its legacy led to the establishment of Zuun Khuree Dashchoilin Monastery, now home to over 100 monks, housing three temples – Tsogchen, Sakhius, and Gandanchoinkhorlin – adorned with rare statues.

Dashchoilin Monastery in Ulaanbaatar is renowned for hosting annual ceremonies such as the Maitreya and Tsam religious mask dances. In 1998, the Zuun Khuree College was established, offering a broad education spectrum, including basic Buddhist teachings, philosophy, and language studies in Indian, Tibetan, and Mongolian.
