Destiny USA, Syracuse (must see)
Destiny USA, formerly known as Carousel Center, is a massive retail and entertainment complex located along the shore of Onondaga Lake in Syracuse, New York. Since opening its doors in 1990, it has grown into the largest shopping mall in the state, offering six above-ground levels and one underground floor. Designed with automobile access in mind, the mall is surrounded by extensive surface parking and multiple garage structures, including one above-ground and two underground garages.
The mall’s retail and entertainment zones are concentrated on the first three floors. The first and second levels stretch the entire length of the building and are filled with a mix of retail shops, restaurants, and family attractions. Visitors will find well-known anchor stores like Macy’s, Old Navy, and Dick’s Sporting Goods, while the second floor also houses the mall’s namesake carousel and a large food court. The third level features a 19-screen Regal Cinemas, several sit-down restaurants, and other entertainment venues, making it a hub for both shoppers and leisure-seekers.
Below ground, the Commons floor offers medium-sized stores, kiosks, and even a chapel. Though it covers only the original 1990 section of the mall, not the 2012 expansion, it remains an active area with access to two underground parking garages. Several former anchor spaces-once home to stores like Best Buy, JCPenney, and Lord & Taylor-are now vacant, reflecting the broader challenges faced by traditional retail.
Destiny USA is accessible from nearly every direction, with entrances on all sides of the complex, including through anchor stores and parking areas. A pedestrian bridge connects one of the outer parking lots to the second level of the newer wing. Public transportation is available via CENTRO buses, providing convenient access for visitors arriving without a car.
