Dovedale Primary School, Liverpool

Herondale Road in Liverpool’s Mossley Hill is home to Dovedale Primary School, which is an ordinary-looking school with some rather extraordinary connections to music history. Among its former pupils were two future members of the Beatles, John Lennon and George Harrison.

Indeed, both Lennon and Harrison attended the same school, although they were several years apart and didn't become friends until later, when they met through Paul McCartney. Another pupil here was Pete Shotton, Lennon's childhood friend, who would later become a member of his first band, The Quarrymen.

And it wasn't just future musicians who passed through Dovedale's classrooms. Other notable former pupils include comedian Jimmy Tarbuck and television newsreader Peter Sissons.

During the 1950s, Dovedale had a strong academic reputation and was known for preparing pupils for some of Liverpool's leading grammar schools, including Quarry Bank High School, the Liverpool Institute for Boys, and Liverpool Blue Coat School. Interestingly, both Lennon and Harrison went on to attend different grammar schools, where their paths would eventually cross with other future Beatles.

The school's Beatles connection was acknowledged in 2001, when Yoko Ono, Lennon's widow, donated £25,000 towards refurbishment work. It was a gesture that helped maintain a link between Lennon's legacy and the school where he had spent some of his early years.

Today, Dovedale remains an active primary school serving the local community. From the outside, there's little to suggest its place in popular music history. Yet for Beatles fans exploring Liverpool, it's another reminder that the band's story began in ordinary neighbourhoods, classrooms, and playgrounds, long before their music became famous around the world.
