Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum, Baltimore

Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum, Baltimore

The Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum offers a direct link to the early life of Edgar Allan Poe, preserving the modest setting where his literary voice began to take shape. Built in 1830, the small brick rowhouse reflects the working-class character of Baltimore at the time. Poe moved here in 1833, at the age of 23, living with his aunt Maria Clemm, grandmother, and young cousin Virginia.

From the outside, the house blends easily into the surrounding line of historic rowhouses. Inside, however, the scale feels noticeably tight. The rooms are narrow, the ceilings low, and the staircase steep. On the first floor, visitors can follow a timeline outlining Poe’s life and early career, alongside basic kitchen implements that reflect everyday domestic life. One of the most interesting spaces is the small attic room on the top floor, often associated with his sleeping and writing quarters. You can move between levels via a steep, tight wooden staircase that connects each floor.

A gallery of photographs is displayed on the second floor. Unlike many historic homes, the interior is minimally furnished, with much of the original woodwork preserved. While few items can be definitively linked to Poe himself, the space includes period objects and interpretive displays.

Within these walls, Poe is believed to have written several early works, including short stories such as “Berenice,” “Morella,” and “The Unparalleled Adventure of One Hans Pfaall,” along with poems like “The Coliseum” and “Serenade.” Today, interpretive panels and reproductions provide context for this period of his life, helping visitors connect the physical space to the themes and tone that would later define his writing.

Opened as a museum in 1949, the house has since been recognized as a U.S. National Historic Landmark. It also hosts the annual International Edgar Allan Poe Festival and Awards each October. Visits are typically by reservation.
