Eichendorff-Anlage (Eichendorff Park), Heidelberg

Eichendorff Park is a small memorial area along Heidelberg’s Philosophers’ Path, set on the slopes of the Holy Mountain below the Bismarck Tower. Surrounded by greenery, it offers a pleasant place to pause while continuing toward the higher parts of the mountain.

The park commemorates Joseph von Eichendorff, one of the leading poets of German Romanticism and a writer who helped shape Heidelberg’s image as a city of Romanticism. Eichendorff studied law, philosophy, and literature at Heidelberg University from 1807 to 1808, and memories of his student years later became closely connected with his idealized view of the city.

This connection is especially evident in his 1855 narrative poem Robert and Guiscard, written just two years before his death. In its opening and closing lines, Eichendorff looks back on Heidelberg as a fairytale-like place of Romantic longing, youthful freedom, and memories of a vanished time.

The main point of interest for visitors is the Eichendorff memorial stone and commemorative plaque on the mountainside, which feature an excerpt from the poem. The setting reinforces the literary atmosphere, with views over Heidelberg, the Neckar, and the surrounding hills nearby.

For tourists, the park is both a quiet rest stop and a meaningful reminder of Heidelberg’s strong ties to German Romanticism and to one of the writers most closely associated with the city’s poetic image.
