Philosophengartchen (Philosophers' Garden), Heidelberg (must see)

The Philosophers’ Garden is one of the most attractive stopping points along Heidelberg’s famous Philosophers’ Path. Set on the sunny southern slope of the Holy Mountain above the northern bank of the Neckar River, this small terraced garden feels like a natural balcony overlooking Heidelberg’s Old Town and Castle.

One of the garden’s most interesting features is its vegetation. Thanks to its protected location and the hillside’s unusually mild climate, plants associated with warmer and even subtropical regions can thrive here. Almond trees, lemon trees, ginkgo trees, palms, pomegranates, and other exotic species add an almost Mediterranean character to the garden. Combined with flower beds, grassy areas, and terraces, the vegetation creates a noticeable contrast with the more heavily wooded slopes higher up the mountain. From the main paved path, step down the short stone staircase onto the upper terrace to walk among the Mediterranean flora, fig trees, and exotic plantings.

The main attraction, however, is the view. From the garden, visitors can look across the Neckar toward the red roofs and church towers of the Old Town, Heidelberg Castle on the opposite hillside, and the surrounding river valley. Benches and grassy areas provide plenty of places to rest, enjoy the fresh air, and take photographs of one of Heidelberg’s classic panoramas. The main viewpoint is located at the front edge of the terrace, framed by a low stone balustrade.

The garden also reflects the literary traditions associated with the Philosophers’ Path. A bust of the Romantic poet Joseph von Eichendorff stands here, accompanied by one of his poems. Like Friedrich Hölderlin, Eichendorff was inspired by Heidelberg and its scenery. Look for the bronze bust of Joseph von Eichendorff set against the stone wall on the northeastern edge of the panoramic terrace.
