Engelse Kerk (English Reformed Church), Amsterdam
Nestled within the Begijnhof, adjacent to the central green, you'll find the charming English Reformed Church. Its name harkens back to the English (and Scottish) Presbyterians who congregated there following its requisition in 1578. Prior to the Alteration, this place of worship was utilized by the Beguines, a Catholic sisterhood who resided in the Begijnhof. Interestingly, a church has graced this location since the late 14th century.
Despite its plain and unembellished appearance, the church holds significance for its intricately crafted pulpit panels, with some of them designed by a young Piet Mondriaan (1872–1944), the prominent De Stijl artist. However, to view these panels, one must attend a church service.
Visitors are only permitted during church services (Sundays at 10:30 am), and there is no general admission.
