Cafe Hoppe, Amsterdam

Café Hoppe has stood on the Spui since 1670, quietly observing Amsterdam as it changed around it. One of the city’s oldest cafés, it has long been woven into political, social, and cultural life. This was the meeting place where Hans van Mierlo helped shape the foundations of the D66 party. It was also a familiar stop for figures as varied as Queen Beatrix, who visited as a young princess during a Salvation Army fundraiser, and Freddy Heineken, often found at the bar. The history is substantial, but it never feels museum-like.

What defines Café Hoppe today is its atmosphere. There is an unmistakable sense of ease here, especially on a Friday afternoon, when regulars and first-time visitors of all ages gather side by side. The café occupies two adjoining buildings: number 18, a protected national monument known for its classic standing-bar tradition, and number 20, added in the early 20th century for those who prefer to sit. Behind the bar, old jenever barrels recall generations of loyal patrons.

Café Hoppe features a wide selection of specialty bottled and draft beers, alongside several award-winning house wines. Its kitchen serves a full lunch and dinner menu, including sandwiches, the Hoppe burger, salads, and a variety of soups. Snacks are available all day, ranging from bitterballen and fried cheese fingers to mixed nuts and tortilla crisps with avocado and chili. In the morning, the café opens for breakfast, offering options such as the French breakfast, a large breakfast, or a lighter healthy start, served with fresh orange juice and coffee.
