Central Station and Railway Museum of Recife, Recife

Central Station and Railway Museum of Recife, Recife

The Central Station and Railway Museum of Recife is housed in a historic railway terminal inaugurated in 1888, during a period of railway expansion in northeastern Brazil. The station linked inland regions to the coast through passenger and cargo routes, with a structure featuring a long façade, arched openings, and iron-supported platforms typical of late 19th-century railway design.

The museum was established in 1972, after rail activity declined and the building was adapted for cultural use. Its exhibitions focus on the history of transportation and urban development, presenting objects such as tools, tickets, communication devices, and scale models. These displays help explain how the railway system influenced economic activity, migration, and the formation of nearby neighborhoods.

A key part of the visit is the collection of preserved locomotives and railcars, some displayed outdoors near the former tracks. The building itself also remains central to the experience, with high ceilings, wide corridors, and original structural details still visible. These elements allow visitors to understand both the operation of the station and its role in shaping regional connections over time.
