Faisal Mosque, Islamabad
The Faisal Mosque is Pakistan's largest mosque. Completed in 1986 and designed by Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay, it resembles a desert Bedouin's tent. Located at the city's northern edge, it sits at the foot of the Margalla Hills, the westernmost foothills of the Himalayas. This elevated spot with a stunning backdrop ensures the mosque is visible from miles away, day and night.
From 1986 to 1993, it was the largest mosque in the world until surpassed by the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, Morocco. Further expansions of the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca and Al-Masjid al-Nabawi in Medina reduced its ranking to fourth place. The idea for the mosque began in 1966 when King Faisal supported Pakistan's plan to build a national mosque in Islamabad.
