Forte Michelangelo (Michelangelo Fortress), Civitavecchia

Forte Michelangelo (Michelangelo Fortress), Civitavecchia (must see)

The Michelangelo Fortress is a remarkable Renaissance-era stronghold built in the 16th century to protect Civitavecchia’s port from pirate invasions and naval attacks. Commissioned by Pope Julius II, the fortress was initially designed by Donato Bramante, a renowned architect also responsible for works in the Vatican. Following his death, construction was continued by Giuliano Leno and Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, and finally completed under Pope Paul III Farnese in 1535.

The uppermost section, known as the Maschio (a towering keep), is attributed to Michelangelo Buonarroti, from whom the fortress takes its name. With its massive defensive walls-some as thick as six meters (20 feet)-and four imposing corner towers, the fortress exemplifies military engineering of the Renaissance while offering stunning sea views.

Fort Michelangelo is not just an architectural masterpiece but also one of the most significant military structures on the Lazio coastline. Located within the historic port of Civitavecchia, it remains an icon of the city and a key landmark for visitors arriving at the port. Today, it serves as the headquarters of the Port Captaincy, and while much of the structure is a military zone, parts of it are open to the public, particularly the interior courtyard on weekends. The fortress also houses a small chapel dedicated to Santa Fermina, the patron saint of Civitavecchia. The Tower of St. Sebastian is rumored to contain a secret passage leading into the old city, adding an air of mystery to the fortress’s rich history.

Over the years, Fort Michelangelo has undergone significant restoration efforts, ensuring that its grandeur remains intact. Visitors can now enjoy a scenic walkway around the fortress, enhanced by decorative moats, sculptures, and antique cannons. Walking along its perimeter provides breathtaking views of the Mediterranean, local fishing boats, and nearby cafés.
