Cattedrale di S. Francesco d’Assisi (Cathedral of Saint Francis of Assisi), Civitavecchia

Cattedrale di S. Francesco d’Assisi (Cathedral of Saint Francis of Assisi), Civitavecchia (must see)

The Cathedral of Saint Francis of Assisi is the city's main church and the seat of the Diocese of Civitavecchia-Tarquinia. Built on the remains of a Franciscan church from the early 17th century, the current structure reflects a blend of Baroque and neoclassical elements. The cathedral's high façade is adorned with two large statues of Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Anthony of Padua, adding to its monumental presence. Above the tympanum, a grand pediment emphasizes the church’s architectural elegance and historical significance. Over the centuries, the cathedral has undergone several transformations, most notably during its reconstruction in 1950 following its destruction in World War II.

Inside, the Cathedral features a single nave, offering visitors an opportunity to admire precious religious artwork. Among its notable pieces is the Nativity, attributed to Domenico Zampieri (Domenichino), a renowned Baroque painter. The interior is decorated with frescoes, religious statues, and biblical tableaus, creating a serene and spiritual atmosphere. The entrance gate was restored in 2015 for Pope Francis' Jubilee of Mercy, and a special plaque commemorating the event was placed at the gate. As the spiritual heart of the city, the cathedral continues to serve as a place of worship, pilgrimage, and historical appreciation.

The cathedral’s history is deeply tied to Civitavecchia’s past, from its initial construction under Pope Clement XIV in 1805 to its devastation in World War II and subsequent rebirth in the mid-20th century. Located in the city center, it remains one of Civitavecchia’s most visited landmarks, drawing both locals and tourists alike.
