Teatro Comunale Traiano (Trajan Municipal Theater), Civitavecchia
The Teatro Traiano of Civitavecchia ( RM ) is located in Corso Centocelle and is the main theater of the city, built in the first half of the 19th century, and inaugurated on 4 May 1844. It is located between "Corso Centocelle" to the south, "Largo Plebiscito" to the west and "Via Traiana" to the north, in front of the eighteenth-century "Palazzo del Quartierone" which at the time housed the military garrison stationed in the Tyrrhenian city, and today the headquarters of the Guardia di Finanza Command; he was called Trajan in honor of the founding emperor of the Tyrrhenian city. Civitavecchia had the first permanent theater construction in 1786 , the building in question, which was built in the central and historic part of the city, was called Minnozzi, from the name of its designer and builder. Despite being a very popular place, the theater was uncomfortable and impractical; moreover, the structure was completely made of wood, which could have caused fires. For these reasons it was decided to create a safer and more definitive building, built by the architect Antonio De Rossi with municipal funding and with the profits obtained from the sale of the boxes to the citizens; it was given the name Teatro Traiano in honor of the Roman emperor who founded the city.
The Trajan Theater in Civitavecchia was built in the first half of the 19th century following the visit of Pope Gregory XVI with the aim of replacing the old Minozzi Theatre. Designed by the architect Antonio De Rossi, it took its name in honor of the emperor Trajan, founder of the city. The Theater is located in Corso Centocelle in front of the eighteenth-century Palazzo della Finanza near the Archaeological Museum . If you are near the museum, to reach the theater you just need to cross Largo Monsignore Giacomo d'Ardia and in a few steps you will find yourself in a pleasant pedestrian area surrounded by shop windows and bars. On May 29, 1999, the Teatro Traiano was finally reopened after over twenty years of inactivity. The theater and the neoclassical façade have been completely restored and modernized and currently consists of a rectangular room equipped with a large stalls, a large, low gallery and two side galleries. The current capacity of the theater is 638 seats of which 384 in the stalls, 206 in the gallery and 48 in the side galleries. The Traiano Theater boasts a rich program of events and shows every year, from Dance to Opera, from Comedy to Musical, always hosting illustrious national and international figures. ***PH***
