Francisco Brennand Sculpture Park, Recife

Francisco Brennand Sculpture Park, Recife

The Francisco Brennand Sculpture Park was created in 2000 by Francisco Brennand as part of a wider artistic project that connects sculpture, architecture, and landscape. Designed as an open-air space, the park allows free movement among the works, with a layout organized along a clear central axis.

At the center stands the Coluna de Cristal, a 32-meter tower set within a circular water basin. Although named for its “crystal” form, it is often given an informal nickname by locals due to its phallic shape, reflecting themes of fertility present in Brennand’s work. The top was inspired by a “crystal flower” identified by Roberto Burle Marx. Around it, ceramic sculptures combine human, animal, and abstract forms in a balanced arrangement.

Water is an essential element in the park’s design. Reflecting pools surround key structures, creating mirrored images of the sculptures and sky while emphasizing symmetry. Walkways guide visitors along the central axis and around the installations, offering shifting perspectives as they move through the space. The park is also used for cultural events, maintaining its role as an active artistic environment connected to Brennand’s broader body of work.
