Government House and Gardens, Perth

Government House and Gardens, Perth

Government House is one of Perth’s most significant civic landmarks and the official residence of the Governor of Western Australia. The site has been connected with the colony’s governors since the foundation of the Swan River Colony in 1829, although the present building was constructed between 1859 and 1864. Standing on Saint Georges Terrace, near Council House and the Supreme Court Gardens, it remains closely tied to the administrative heart of the city.

Designed by Edmund Henderson, Government House was built largely with convict labor and is usually described as Jacobean Revival in style, with a strong Victorian character. Its red brickwork, stone detailing, decorative gables, arched elements, and turret-like features give the building a distinctive appearance. It was created not only as a residence but also as a setting for official receptions, ceremonies, and meetings connected with the government of Western Australia.

The gardens are an important part of the site’s appeal. Covering about 3.2 hectares, they provide a green setting of trees, lawns, paths, shade, and outdoor artworks in the middle of the city. A separate building known as The Lodge was added around 1904 in the north-eastern part of the gardens and was designed in the Federation Queen Anne style. Today, the gardens are generally open to the public, though visitors should check current access before planning a visit.
