Kangaroos in The City, Perth

Kangaroos in The City, Perth

Kangaroos in The City, located in Perth, presents a collection of bronze sculptures that have captivated both children and adults since their unveiling. This installation is situated in Stirling Gardens, prominently positioned in front of the City of Perth council building, enriching the urban landscape with a touch of natural beauty and artistic excellence.

Crafted by the talented Irish sculptor couple, Joan Walsh-Smith and Charles Smith, these sculptures were completed in 1997 and have since become an iconic feature of the city. Known for their remarkable work on the HMSA Sydney II Memorial in Geraldton, the Smiths' expertise in creating emotive and lifelike public art is evident in this installation as well.

The artwork consists of five kangaroos, each meticulously designed to appear almost lifelike, capturing the essence of these iconic Australian animals in their natural states. The sculptures were unveiled in two stages, showcasing the diversity and dynamics of kangaroo behavior. Stage 1 features three male kangaroos: one drinking, another alert, and the third captured in the midst of a leap, embodying the energy and movement of these creatures. Stage 2 introduces a female kangaroo accompanied by her joey, adding a tender dimension to the group and completing the family unit.

These bronze kangaroos are more than life-sized, with weights ranging from 850 to 1000 kg each, making them not only a visual spectacle but also a testament to the artists' skill in handling such large-scale works. As part of the City of Perth’s Public Art Collection, they stand as a significant contribution to the cultural and artistic landscape of the city, offering residents and visitors alike a unique and engaging experience.
