Gus Fisher Gallery, Auckland

Gus Fisher Gallery, Auckland

The Gus Fisher Gallery is a modern art gallery that's owned and run by the University of Auckland in Auckland. It's situated within the Kenneth Myers Centre, a historical building that was restored in the year 2000, thanks to the support of Gus Fisher, who was a patron of the gallery until his passing in 2010. This gallery regularly hosts exhibitions that engage with social themes, featuring both international and local artists. Additionally, it offers a wide range of public events, including performances, film screenings, workshops, panel discussions, and activities for families.

The Gus Fisher Gallery was established in 2001 to serve as a venue for the first Auckland Triennial, under the leadership of its inaugural director, Robin Stoney. From 2006 to 2017, it was operated by the University of Auckland Centre for Art Research, which was founded in 2006 to support and enhance academic and research activities related to the Gus Fisher Gallery, the University of Auckland Art Collection, and Window. The gallery's mission was to present a well-rounded and pertinent selection of curated exhibitions, encompassing both contemporary and historical art, with the aim of exploring and challenging current visual arts knowledge on both a national and international level.

In recognition of its contributions to the arts scene, Gus Fisher Gallery received the title of Metro Magazine's Best Arts Institution in Auckland in 2008, as part of their annual Best of Auckland Issue. In 2018, the gallery shifted its focus toward contemporary art exhibitions, with a particular emphasis on film and video work, reflecting the building's history as broadcasting studios.
