Henry Doorly Zoo, Omaha

Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is one of the world's leading zoological institutions, recognized for its immersive habitats, conservation programs, and scientific research. The zoo traces its origins to Riverview Park, established in 1894, with the zoological collection developing soon afterward. In 1963, the facility was named Henry Doorly Zoo following a major gift from Margaret Hitchcock Doorly in memory of her husband, newspaper publisher Henry Doorly.

It adopted its current name after the opening of the Suzanne and Walter Scott Aquarium in 1995. Today, it is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and recognized for leadership in animal care, conservation, and education. The zoo houses thousands of animals representing hundreds of species in naturalistic habitats. Its best-known attractions include the Desert Dome, one of the world's largest indoor deserts; Kingdoms of the Night, one of the world's largest nocturnal exhibits; the Lied Jungle, one of the world's largest indoor rainforests; and the Suzanne and Walter Scott Aquarium, featuring marine and freshwater ecosystems. Other exhibits include African Grasslands, Asian Highlands, Sea Lion Shores, Hubbard Gorilla Valley, Expedition Madagascar, and the Simmons Aviary.

Beyond its exhibits, the zoo is internationally recognized for wildlife conservation, captive breeding, reproductive science, veterinary medicine, genetics, and field research. Educational programs, animal encounters, seasonal events, and interactive experiences introduce visitors to biodiversity and environmental stewardship. Through partnerships with conservation organizations worldwide, the zoo helps protect endangered species through research and education.
