Hisa eksperimentov (House of Experiments), Ljubljana

Hiša eksperimentov (House of Experiments) is Slovenia’s first hands-on science centre. It was founded as a non-profit organisation in 1996, initially presenting temporary exhibitions before opening its permanent centre in 2000. Visitors explore physics, mathematics, biology, engineering, and human perception through direct experimentation. Humorous drawings and instructions by Slovenian caricaturist Božo Kos appear throughout the displays.

Among the best-known activities are a bed of nails, a pulley system that allows visitors to lift themselves into the air, and a giant soap bubble station. Around 60 interactive exhibits examine sound, electricity, balance, optical illusions, the senses, and human anatomy, although individual displays may change over time. Some stations also record visitors’ results electronically.

The centre organises demonstrations, workshops, temporary exhibitions, and evening science lectures known as znaČAJ znanosti, where tea, biscuits, or fruit are traditionally served. Its annual Elastomobil competition challenges students to build vehicles powered only by prescribed elastic bands. The mobile Hiška eksperimentov programme carries around 50 smaller exhibits to schools, creating a temporary science centre for a day.
