Osrednja ljubljanska trznica (Ljubljana Central Market), Ljubljana

Osrednja ljubljanska tržnica (Ljubljana Central Market) has served as a major trading and meeting place since the early 20th century. Much of the riverside complex was designed by Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik and opened in 1942. Its long colonnade combines classical columns, stone pillars, heavy roof tiles, semicircular windows, and open loggias overlooking the river. Plečnik planned the market as part of a wider architectural “Water Axis” connecting the Triple Bridge with the river barrier.

The stalls sell seasonal produce, flowers, honey, cheeses, cured meats, bread, and traditional preserved foods, often supplied by families who have traded here for generations. A 24-hour milk vending machine supplies fresh raw milk and dairy products from nearby farms. The lower level of the colonnade contains the fish market as well as DobraVaga, a gallery where young artists exhibit and sell contemporary works.

Plečnik originally intended to build a monumental covered bridge beside the market, but the project was interrupted by the Second World War. Butchers’ Bridge, completed on the planned site in 2010, partly recalls this unrealised idea. Weekly food events, seasonal fairs, small speciality shops, and everyday local trade keep the market closely connected with both traditional food culture and contemporary public life.

By the early first century AD, the Romans had...  view more
