Franciskanska Cerkev (Franciscan Church of the Annunciation), Ljubljana

The Franciscan Church of the Annunciation is a major example of Baroque religious architecture. Built between 1646 and 1660 by Augustinian monks, it replaced an earlier church on the site. The Franciscans took over the complex in the late 18th century following the reforms of Emperor Joseph II. Dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, the church is known for its pink façade and remains active, hosting Masses, concerts, and religious celebrations.

The Baroque façade features pilasters, niches, sculptural details, and two prominent bell towers topped with onion-shaped spires. Inside, visitors can see a spacious nave, decorated side chapels, ornate altars, and ceiling frescoes. After the 1895 earthquake damaged the church’s ceiling, structural renovations stabilised the building, while Matej Sternen, a Slovenian Impressionist painter, created new ceiling frescoes during the 1930s.

The church is closely connected with Slovenian cultural history and stands beside the monument to the national poet France Preseren. Sacred music performances are held throughout the year, especially during major religious festivals. Visitors may enter outside service times to view the architecture and artworks while respecting the church’s continuing role as a place of worship.
