Zmajski Most (Dragon Bridge), Ljubljana (must see)

Dragon Bridge spans the Ljubljanica River and is closely linked with the dragon shown on the city’s coat of arms. Built between 1900 and 1901, it replaced an older wooden crossing known as the Butchers’ Bridge, which had been damaged by the 1895 earthquake. The new structure was originally called the Jubilee Bridge of Emperor Franz Joseph I, marking the fortieth anniversary of his reign.

The bridge was constructed using engineer Josef Melan’s reinforced-concrete system. It became the first reinforced-concrete bridge in the city and the first structure in Slovenia to receive an asphalt surface. Reinforced concrete was chosen partly because it was cheaper than stone. Jurij Zaninović, a student of the Viennese architect Otto Wagner, designed its Secession-style decoration, including the lamps, parapets, and sculptural details.

The bridge’s dragons were originally planned as winged lions, but city authorities replaced them with dragons to reflect local heraldry. Their green colour comes from the natural patina that formed on the copper. The decorative lamps were originally powered by gas, demonstrating the modern infrastructure introduced at the beginning of the 20th century. Step up to any of the four corner pedestals to come face-to-face with the iconic copper dragons and their flared wings. Looking lower along the base of the parapet reveals smaller sculpted, griffin-like figures.

Next, step onto the bridge and pause halfway across the span beside the Art Nouveau railing to obtain a clear view west towards Plečnik’s market colonnades and up towards the wooded slope of Castle Hill.

Local tradition connects the dragon with Jason and the Argonauts, who are said to have defeated a creature in the nearby marshes. Another playful legend claims that the dragons wag their tails whenever a virgin crosses the bridge. The crossing remains in regular use and offers views of the river, market buildings, and Castle Hill.
