History Museum, Lucerne

History Museum, Lucerne

The Lucerne History Museum is dedicated to showcasing, collecting, recording, and presenting objects of cultural and historical significance, as well as folklore, from the Canton Lucerne and the Lake Lucerne Region. The museum takes pride in its relevance and its engaging, interactive approach. It achieves this through the use of theatrical elements, exhibitions, and events that collectively bring the cultural history of the area to life.

Engaging Theatrical Tours: Skilled actors conduct daily guided tours with cultural and historical themes. These tours last for 40 minutes and start at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m.

Individual Exploration: The permanent exhibition features approximately 3,000 artifacts and employs an innovative display warehouse concept. Each item has a barcode, allowing visitors to use handheld scanners to scan them. This provides insights into each item and allows visitors to embark on a journey through the cultural history of Central Switzerland.

The Danse Macabre on the Spreuer Bridge: A captivating scene unfolds on the Spreuer Bridge in the form of the Dance of Death. In 1637, Caspar Meglinger completed his baroque cycle of paintings that vividly depict the transient nature of life and the omnipresence of death. Death is portrayed as universal, affecting individuals of all ages and social backgrounds, including the young and old, nuns and Popes, aristocrats and servant girls.

Visitors are accompanied by an audio guide as they explore the Dance of Death, starting from the History Museum, crossing the Spreuer Bridge to Mühlenplatz, and returning. Historical commentary is complemented by evocative music to enhance the overall experience.
