Hot Shops Art Center, Omaha

Hot Shops Art Center is an artist-operated creative complex established in 1999, when a group of artists and private investors began converting the former Serta mattress factory into shared studios and production facilities. The 92,000-square-foot building now contains approximately 90 resident artists in more than 50 studios, making it the region’s largest artist collective.

Rather than functioning as a conventional museum, it provides a working space where art is created, exhibited, taught, and sold. Artists specialize in painting, photography, ceramics, sculpture, glass, jewelry, textiles, bookbinding, woodworking, metalwork, printmaking, violin making, and mixed media. The center’s name refers to its four specialized “hot shops,” devoted to glassblowing, pottery, bronze casting, and blacksmithing. Visitors are welcome to explore the building, meet resident artists, and observe works in progress whenever studios are open. The glass studio is open for public viewing during demonstrations, although schedules vary. Two galleries present changing exhibitions featuring resident and visiting artists, and most works are available for purchase directly from their creators.

Hot Shops Art Center also organizes classes, workshops, gallery openings, open-studio events, and educational visits for schools and community groups. Programs cover glassblowing, torchworking, pottery, jewelry, fiber arts, and printmaking, with schedules changing throughout the year. Admission is free, and visitors are encouraged to allow time to explore the three publicly accessible floors. Because the studios remain active workplaces, guests should ask permission before photographing artists or their work and respect any temporary studio closures or demonstrations in progress.
