Illumina, Omaha

Illumina is a large public art installation created by Omaha sculptor Matthew Placzek in 2007. Installed outside the CHI Health Center, formerly known as the Qwest Center, the work was designed to represent the artistic and cultural performances presented within the venue. Measuring approximately 35 feet tall and 100 feet wide, it combines monumental sculpture, figurative bronze work, and changing illumination rather than consisting only of abstract light elements.

The outdoor portion is anchored by a 35-foot stainless-steel clock surrounded by six oversized bronze figures. These performers represent several branches of the arts, including music, acting, dance, and circus entertainment. The installation is made from stainless steel, bronze, acrylic, and LED lighting. Inside the building, illuminated acrylic spheres form another part of the composition. Approximately 2,000 LED lights create changing colors and patterns after dark, giving the artwork a different appearance at night. Illumina connects the visual arts with the concerts, conventions, sporting events, and other programs held at the surrounding complex. Visitors can walk around the outdoor figures, examine their expressive poses, and observe the contrast between the bronze performers and the polished central clock.

The installation is especially striking after sunset, when its programmed lighting transforms the sculpture with shifting colors and reflections. Its scale and prominent location beside a major public venue make it a recognizable example of contemporary public art that complements the surrounding entertainment district.
