Howard Carter House, Luxor

Howard Carter House, Luxor

Nestled along the captivating west bank of Luxor sits the Howard Carter House, a testament to the remarkable achievements of the British archaeologist and Egyptologist, Howard Carter. Best known for his leadership in the excavation of Tutankhamun's tomb, Carter's residence during this pivotal period has now evolved into a prominent tourist attraction.

Following a recommendation by French Egyptologist Sir Gaston Maspero in 1907, Carter was enlisted by Lord Carnarvon to supervise excavations at Deir El Bahari's tombs. His success in this endeavor led to his appointment as the lead archaeologist for the excavation of the Valley of the Kings in Luxor. It was during this venture that Carter's groundbreaking discovery of Tutankhamun's hidden chamber in November 1922 captured global attention.

Although Carter's house fell into disuse after the completion of his mission, Egyptian archaeologist Dr. Zahi Hawass advocated for its reopening to the public, providing a glimpse into Carter's years of dedication and exploration. Today, the house stands as a museum, characterized by its distinctive dome-shaped roof and surrounded by verdant foliage. Visitors can explore Carter's original living quarters adorned with maps, antiquarian books, and personal writings, alongside replicas of Tutankhamun's tomb and its treasures.

Adjacent to Carter's House lies a café, offering visitors a tranquil spot to unwind after their tour. Additionally, the nearby mud-brick building, once owned by French conservator Alexandre Stoppelaëre, adds to the historical charm of the site. Built in 1950 by an Egyptian architect, it stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of exploration and discovery in the region.
