El-Khokha Necropolis, Luxor

El-Khokha Necropolis is part of the vast Theban Necropolis on the west bank of the Nile and served as a burial place for officials, priests, and administrators of ancient Egypt. The site includes more than 130 tombs, with some of the oldest decorated rock-cut tombs in the area dating back to the Old Kingdom. Its name is linked to the Arabic word khokha, meaning a small gate or opening, likely referring to the many tomb entrances visible across the hillside.

The tombs are known for painted walls and carved reliefs showing daily life, religious ceremonies, agricultural work, craftsmanship, and preparations for the afterlife. They reveal the roles, status, achievements, and beliefs of officials and priests beyond the royal court. Notable examples include the Tomb of the Two Sculptors, shared by Nebamon and Ipuky, and the deep tomb of Amenemhat, also known as Surer.

Visitors exploring El-Khokha can experience one of the quieter sections of the Theban Necropolis. Its dense network of chambers, shafts, and tunnels reflects more than two thousand years of burial use. Ongoing archaeological work and restoration projects continue to uncover inscriptions, burial shafts, and funerary objects linked to the officials and families buried here.
