Huerto de Calixto y Melibea (Garden of Calixto and Melibea), Salamanca

Garden of Calixto and Melibea was inspired by the tragicomedy Calisto and Melibea by Fernando de Rojas, a masterpiece of Spanish literature first published in 1499/1502. The garden was inaugurated in 1981 and its title honors the protagonists’ clandestine meetings and their enduring story of passion and fate.

Overlooking the majestic cathedral skyline, this intimate garden is shaded by Mediterranean and exotic species-including Canary Island palms, Washingtonia palms, Cordyline terminalis, agapantos, plumbago, and other plants added in 1991 to evoke a romantic Andalusian ambiance. The garden's charm lies in its layered vegetation, floral undergrowth, and whispering pathways.

Visitors often pause at the well-its grate adorned with padlocks as symbols of devotion-and linger by the bust of The Celestina. Locals and travelers alike speak of the garden as a quiet escape-a place to write, stroll, or simply breathe deeply before the bustle of the city.
