Imambara Ghufran Ma'ab, Lucknow

Imambara Ghufran Ma'ab, Lucknow

Imambara Ghufran Ma’ab is a distinguished shrine and centre of Shia mourning rituals, built in the early 1790s by Ayatollah Syed Dildar Ali Nasirabadi-better known by his honorific title Ghufran Ma’ab. As a revered theological figure, he was recognized as the first Mujtahid of India and played a pivotal role in spreading the Usuli school of Shiʿism through his writings and leadership. The Imambara bears his name and serves today as both a spiritual and cultural landmark deeply rooted in Lucknow’s rich Shia heritage.

The building functions not only as a place for prayer and religious gatherings but also as a mausoleum for eminent scholars and descendants of Ghufran Ma’ab. The grounds include a graveyard where many distinguished figures such as Maulana Syed Kalbe Abid, Maulana Syed Kalbe Hussain, and others of his lineage are interred.

For visitors, the Imambara offers insight into Lucknow’s religious traditions and socio-cultural rituals. The venue draws significant crowds especially during the first ten days of Muharram, when those attending the internationally renowned Shaam‑e‑Ghariban majlis participate in mournful remembrance as the evening descends.

Beyond its religious importance, Ghufran Ma’ab Imambara is also a fine example of late‑18th century Lucknow architecture and remains a family-run institution handed down through generations. Guided by hereditary caretakers such as Maulana Syed Kalbe Jawad, the site maintains active religious life and remains accessible to respectful tourists seeking to learn about the city’s Islamic traditions and communal values.
