Jalan Sulawesi is best known as a fabric-shopping area, with tightly packed shops and independent vendors selling textiles in many colours, patterns, and grades. The area has long been associated with cloth trading and is still affectionately called Kampung Arab by some locals, reflecting the merchant families who have run textile businesses here for three or four generations. Traces of that history remain in the older shopfronts, family-run counters, and the practical rhythm of trade.

The main attraction is the range of fabrics: cotton, silk, organza, batik, lace, decorative trims, and materials used for kebaya blouses, ceremonial dress, uniforms, interiors, and custom clothing. Quilters may also find batik fat quarters, pre-cut squares, jelly rolls, and other smaller-format pieces in some shops, especially toward the ends of the shopping strip. The experience is busy and hands-on, with stacked rolls, folded bolts, narrow interiors, colour samples, and quick bargaining over price and quality.

The area also connects easily with nearby local landmarks. Nearby, the large traditional market is busiest in the early morning, when flowers for daily offerings are sold in baskets. The area is also close to the gold-and-silver shop district and Bhineka Jaya, a coffee shop dating to 1935. Morning visits are easiest, as many shops are narrow, warm, and cash-oriented.
