Pura Maospahit (Maospahit Temple), Denpasar (must see)
Pura Maospahit, also known as Maospahit Temple, is one of Bali’s older Hindu temple compounds, closely linked with Majapahit-era heritage. Some local interpretations connect the name “Maospahit” with maos, meaning “to speak,” and pahit, meaning “difficult” or “bitter.” In this reading, the temple was remembered as a sacred place where rulers and officials gathered to discuss serious problems facing the kingdom.
Tradition also links its earliest shrine with Sri Kbo Iwa, the giant-like warrior-architect of Balinese legend. According to local accounts, he built the original shrine as part of his duty in the Badung region. This gives the temple a strong place in local memory, where religious practice, political history, and legend meet in the same sacred space.
The temple is especially known for its red-brick architecture, which gives it a different character from many stone-carved Balinese temples. Its layout follows the Panca Mandala concept, a five-zone arrangement often understood as a symbolic map of the cosmos. With its central sacred zone recalling older Javanese palace layouts, the temple reflects strong cultural links with the Majapahit world and the artistic exchange between Bali and Java.
Visitors will notice a strong, almost fortress-like quality in the temple’s design. High perimeter walls, red-brick gateways, and the large Kori Agung, or main gate, give the inner sanctum a protected feel. Larger-than-life figures of Garuda and Batara Bayu, the God of Wind, are worked into the split gateway. In the early morning, flower offerings often fill the courtyards, adding colour to the temple’s quiet atmosphere. As an active place of worship, it calls for modest dress and respectful behaviour.
