Pasar Kumbasari (Kumbasari Market), Denpasar

Pasar Kumbasari, also known as Kumbasari Market, is one of the main traditional shopping places in the area, closely linked with Badung Market across the river. It opened in the late 1970s and was later rebuilt and reorganized after major fires, including those in 2000 and 2007. Although tourists often come here for souvenirs, the market also works as a wholesale supply point, with many smaller shops from tourist areas buying goods here before reselling them elsewhere.

The market is arranged over several levels, each with a different focus. The ground floor is busiest in the early morning, with fresh produce, groceries, and daily goods. The upper floors focus on textiles, Balinese clothing, paintings, wood carvings, shell crafts, paper crafts, and souvenirs. The market also sells ritual items such as incense, silver water vessels, and colourful temple parasols.

Its character changes throughout the day. Before sunrise, it serves local wholesale traders; by day, it becomes a craft and textile market; and in the evening, parts of the ground floor turn into a night market with snacks such as spring rolls and sweet rice cakes. Nearby, the revitalized riverfront adds paved paths, seating, lighting, and a more modern contrast to the older market atmosphere.
