Joslyn Castle, Omaha

Joslyn Castle, originally known as Lynhurst, is a historic mansion completed in 1903 for businessman and newspaper publisher George A. Joslyn and his wife, Sarah H. Joslyn. Designed as their private residence, it became closely associated with the couple’s civic and philanthropic activities. George lived there until his death in 1916, while Sarah remained until 1940. The estate later passed through institutional ownership before being preserved by the Joslyn Castle Trust, which now operates the property as a historic site and cultural venue.

The mansion was designed by Omaha architect John McDonald in the Scottish Baronial style. Its architecture features a complex roofline, towers, turrets, carved stonework, projecting bays, and other medieval-inspired details. The house was constructed primarily from Kansas Silverdale limestone and contains elaborate interior woodwork, stained and leaded glass, mosaic tile floors, ornamental fireplaces, and richly finished reception rooms. Much of the original interior decoration survives, although not every piece of furniture on display belonged to the Joslyn family. The surrounding estate was designed with landscaped grounds, gardens, mature trees, greenhouses, and formal outdoor spaces.

Today, the house and grounds host guided tours, lectures, concerts, weddings, seasonal programs, and other cultural events. Visitors can explore selected rooms while learning about the architecture, the Joslyn family, and the broader social history connected with the estate. The mansion also reflects the family’s lasting legacy, as Sarah Joslyn later funded the Joslyn Memorial, now the Joslyn Art Museum, which opened in 1931 in memory of her husband.
