Joslyn Castle, Omaha

Joslyn Castle, Omaha

Joslyn Castle was constructed in 1903 in the Scottish Baronial style. It reflects the architectural trends of its time, evoking the medieval tower houses of Scotland with its crow-stepped gables and crenellations. Designed by local architect John McDonald, the mansion boasts 35 rooms spread over four stories, including a carriage house tower and extensive formal gardens landscaped by renowned architect Jens Jensen.

Originally the residence of George and Sarah Joslyn, the Castle served as a symbol of their wealth and influence. George Joslyn, having made his fortune in the news business, spared no expense in creating a lavish home equipped with state-of-the-art technology for the era, such as telephones, central heating, and indoor plumbing. The Castle's opulent interior, featuring a reception hall, music room, ballroom, and library, is a testament to the couple's cultivated tastes and social standing.

Over the years, the Castle has served various purposes, including housing the headquarters of the Omaha Public Schools district. Today, it is managed and preserved by the Joslyn Castle Trust, offering tours, events, and private rentals to the public. As a landmark in the Gold Coast Historic District and a site in the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum, Joslyn Castle continues to captivate visitors with its rich history and timeless elegance.
