St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, Omaha

St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church is a historic parish connected with the growth of the local Greek community in the early 20th century. Greek immigration increased around 1904, with many newcomers working in the meatpacking industry.

The parish’s first church was built in 1908. In 1951, the congregation acquired the former Temple Israel building and moved there after renovations in 1953. The present church was consecrated in 1958 and belongs to the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, within the Metropolis of Denver. Originally constructed as a synagogue, the building is noted for its Byzantine-inspired architecture. Its large dome is pierced by windows at the base and supported on pendentives resting on four substantial columns, creating a spacious interior and strong acoustics. Orthodox services incorporate sacred images, chanting, incense, candles, processions, and ceremonial vestments. Sunday worship centers on Matins and the Divine Liturgy, following Byzantine Christian traditions. Visitors interested in the architecture can arrange church tours through the parish. The parish preserves Greek cultural traditions through religious education, youth activities, dance programs, and community organizations. Its best-known public event is Omaha’s Original Greek Festival, held since 1978, featuring Greek food and pastries, live music, traditional dancing, cultural exhibits, shopping, children’s activities, and church tours.
