St. Cecilia's Cathedral, Omaha

Saint Cecilia Cathedral stands as the prominent cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese in Omaha. Its completion in 1959 marked it among the ten largest cathedrals in the United States, an honor reflected in its listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

Diverging from the prevailing Gothic architecture of the era, the cathedral boasts an elegant Spanish Renaissance Revival style. This departure was a deliberate nod to the region's early Spanish and Mexican influences, a choice championed by architect Thomas Rogers Kimball.

The cathedral, perched atop one of Omaha's gentle hills, witnessed its cornerstone laid in 1907. Though services commenced within its walls by 1916, its full consecration awaited the culmination of its construction, marked by the domed cupolas crowning the twin towers.

Crafted with a steel frame enveloped by sturdy masonry walls clad in Bedford limestone, the cathedral boasts a robust yet elegant presence. Its red Spanish tile roof and soaring twin towers, reaching a height of 187 feet, further underscore its grandeur.
