Lincoln American Tower, Memphis
The Lincoln American Tower is a 22-story steel frame skyscraper located on the corner of North Main and Court Street, the historic economic center of Memphis. It was one of the first steel frame skyscrapers constructed in Memphis. It was built in 1924 by Lloyd T. Binford, head of the Memphis Censor Board. The Neo-Gothic building is a one-third scale replica of the Woolworth Building in New York. It is one of the most identifiable attractions in the city.
The skyscraper is located near the former site of Irvin Block Prison, a prison used to house Confederate sympathizers during the Civil War. The 85,000 square foot building features a white terra cotta exterior and contains 31 residential apartments, three floors of commercial offices, and the Ceriello Foods Company.
The ground floor of the retail space includes a professional kitchen and a small freight elevator, making it ideal for catered events or a restaurant. The third and fourth floors of the building are dedicated office spaces that can be leased together or separately or customized to meet the needs of the client. Although the skyscraper’s top floors and roof were heavily damaged during a 2006 fire from the nearby First United Methodist Church, the building quickly recovered.
